I'm on the mailing list somwhere because I got this press-release from somewhere reminding me of the gathering of Pacific Island leaders in New York and their more important (?) sideshow (?) in Washington DC where they get to meet people who can really decide the fate of this planet.

The statement and information from the Department of State on the Pacific Islands Conference of Leaders currently held in Washington DC is available on the following link:

Thank you,

A few friends from NY have been telling us things are happening, and every now and then you get a glimpse on CNN that our people are actually in the USA shaking and baking, or grovelling and drooling, somewhere in there lies the truth.

Things look really promising, and I'm sure that the Chinese influence of $112 million is important enough for  the USA to review its position on the South Pacific, since that amount of coconuts can easily lead to debt and other 'commitments.'

According to Rice, many Pacific Island countries face growing political, environmental and economic challenges, and these are often compounded by other, more long-term transnational threats.  In response to these challenges, she said, the United States and Pacific Island nations "are working together to chart a comprehensive approach, promoting opportunity and prosperity, good governance and the rule of law, greater peace and security.

“I stress this comprehensive approach for an important reason, because we all know and share the conviction that democracy plays a key role in fostering political and economic development,” she said.

But remember that this is the same government that supported dictators, and drug lords when it fit their own security plans.
