Singing at the Lyceum

Low No Cost Tech
Posted by: Samiuela LV Taufa on May 19, 2006 12:02:40 PM

The only lyceum I had known off for the past short life, is the "The Lyceum" in downtown Sydney that was part of the complex used by the Central Methodist Mission and its later name Wesley Mission. My dad used to volunteer work there and he'd take us down there, as well as going for the Sunday services.

The Lyceum, at that time, showed movies during the week and then became a mega chapel on Sunday evening. I think my Aunt took us there to see Murder on the Orient Express at the Lyceum many moons ago. Of course, I had been there for many a Sunday Evening Service, as well as having taken part in Christmas Carols and a bunch of that youth stuff.

Now that http://www.ibiblio.org have used the word lyceum to brand their adaptation  of the http://www.wordpress.com blog engine:

http://lyceum.ibiblio.org

Lyceum is a multi-blog derivative of WordPress, suitable for installations with 2 or 200,000 blogs!

It was time to find something more about the word, and the product. Dictionary.com provides a definition of the word which gives me more understanding of the original lyceum at http://www.wesleymission.org.au that I knew, and how it applies to this "new" project.

http://www.dictionary.com

ly·ce·um   Audio pronunciation of "lyceum" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (l-sm)
n.

  1. A hall in which public lectures, concerts, and similar programs are presented.
  2. An organization sponsoring public programs and entertainment.
  3. A lycée.

[Latin Lycum, from Greek Lukeion the school outside Athens where Aristotle taught (335-323 B.C.).]

So, it looks like Lyceum the blogging product is trying to bring us together in a great blog-hall to meet and learn. Cooool.

Even better, John Joseph Bachir has written a great article on what/how lyceum can fit your needs over at redhat.com. If blogs and multiple blogs peak your interest then you really should take a look at the article, and consider trialling the software for your needs.

In evaluating current offerings, we saw WordPress emerging as the leader in flexibility and popularity. Not only did it have an excellent feature set, but also a loyal and sophisticated community of theme and plugin development.

The solution seemed clear: people needed an easy way to build and manage an arbitrary number of WordPress blogs. After evaluating WordPress' schema, we were happy to find that such a system would scale quite well.

A few things I didn't know about "My Lyceum" is they refurbish computers for the needy in Sydney. If you need computers for some disadvantaged friends, or you're just a geek who needs to use up fossil fuels running more computers in your house, walk over to http://www.wesleycomputers.org and buy your computers there. They are part of the Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher (MAR) program, which essentially means you get a legitimate Windows 98 SE license with your refurbed computer.  Caveat Emptor, I have no experience with this service but thought it interesting to try. The prices seem no more than other refurbish houses so the next server I put together at the house (a couple of months away) will be my first trial of this service.

Wesley Mission also operate Charity Flowers, I've bought a few flowers online for Australia, so again, if you want to support the good cause, take a look at ordering your flowers through http://www.charityflowers.com/. Caveat Emptor, I have no experience with this service but thought it interesting to try. There's a few things coming up for which I'll be needing flowers so if I get a bad experience I'll let you all know.

There are some other services available for both the disadvantaged and the not so disadvantaged, so if you live in Sydney or have friends there, go over there and look for yourself: http://www.wesleymission.org.au. I will be checking them out, and wish I knew about a few of them a couple of years ago.
