Just finished putting down Matthew Reilly's Hover Car Racer, a 428 page fun thriller that I'd recommend to anyone who's ever been interested in those action films.
From the Back Cover.
Meet Jason Chaser, hover car racer. He's won himself a place at the International Race School, where racers either make it on the Pro Circuit - or they crash and burn.
But he's an outsider. He's younger than the other racers. His car, the Argonaut, is older. And on top of that, someone doesn't want him to succeed at the School and will do anything to stop him.
Now Jason Chaser isn't just fighting for his place on the starting line, he's racing for his life.
'the fastest book you'll ever read' Sydney Morning Herald
'high-octane Harry Potter' The Age
'exhilarating ... fast-action fiction' Canberra Times
'fast and furios' Brisbane News
If you haven't caught a hint from the quoted news papers (they're all Major Australian papers) the author's Australian, and he's a good writer to boot.
I first read the paperback on the author's website, when he released it as a free serialised download. 'Ofa wasn't too interested in reading a novel on the computer screen (I wonder why ?) so we waited until we could get back to oz, and our first trip to K-Mart/BigW saw the book find itself into the shopping cart.
So we've faithfully been entertained in his previous works.
His work is definitely marked for those who want to be entertained, not necessarily delve into secret rituals or codes or military. 'Ofa who has been put off some of the other books I've brought home just loves his work and wants it on the list whenever he publishes.
Seven Ancient Wonders - was supposed to be in the shopping cart (his latest title) but we got home and the sales clerk hadn't rung it so it didn't get into the shopping cart. If you've gone shopping with a 4 year-old and a 2 year-old you'll understand what happened.
Serious warning. If your intentions of picking up a novel is to be bombarded with the author's minute research into physics, history, reality and a whole bunch of other stuff, then please go read somewhere else. If, on the other hand, you like picking up a book to be entertained, to be wrapped by the author's prose into a reality that may plausibly be true although you know it's not possible, then run to the shop and pick up the nearest Matthew Reilly book you can get.
His books, so far, have all been great yarns to escape into for a couple of hours.
