The newspapers Talaki and Taimi 'o Tonga have apparently been notified by the propietor of Morris Hedstrom that their paper is no longer acceptable to be retailed by the major supermarket.
This ban on the sales of the Talaki and Taimi 'o Tonga from the major retailer comes directly after both papers heavily criticised or reported on criticisms of the Minister of Labour Commerce and Small Industries, Dr. Feleti Sevele.
As an individual business man, Dr. Sevele has all the rights and privileges of an individual on how they choose to do business and can legally/morally refuse to sell anything they choose. The Morris Hedstrom department/supermarket is one of the major food outlets on Nuku'alofa and it is operated by Dr. Sevele's daughter.
Unfortunately it bodes badly for your average joe citizens if it is now apparent that if your elected Minister doesn't like what you have to say, he isn't going to represent your views. So much for elected representatives of the people. Worse than this is the tone it sets that the Minister might not protect your freedoms of speech, because they are not protecting the freedom of the press.
When it comes between self interest and public interest, the case of the ban on critical newspapers indicates your Minister may just prefer self-interest over the public interest.
