New Ministers, Restless Natives, and the Vote

Pita Taufatofua was in a panela the other night together with Mateaki Heimuli, 'Eseta Fusitu'a and Va'inga Palu discussing the new ministry appointments.

When asked for his opinion on the matter, Pita called to his fellow Government workers that they should pull together and work with the Minister to improve things for Tonga. He asked people not to pre-judge the performance of their new Minister, Hon. Peauafi Haukinima, but allow the new Minister time to perform.

One of his emphasis, points, is that there is only 1 1/2 years left until the next elections, and at this time workers have a clear mandate and procedure for getting rid of an underperforming Minister. Senior Heads of Departments are contracted and evaluated by the Government, but the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is one of the Ministers appointed from parliamentarians elected by the people. The people have a direct influence on this Minister's appointment, unlike other departments.

The other key point of Pita's that all should remember; Tonga isn't going to get better while we bicker and fight with each other, we need to come together and work together to make things better. Pull your heads in and work together for the next short while so we can see the truth of performance by the Government, but primarily so we can make things better for Tonga.

The interesting part about all of this is whether the Prime Minister's position will be 'put to the vote.' Technically speaking, even if he were not re-elected by the people the King can still appoint him as PM which is not tied to the general election. That would be weird, and wild conjecture.

Again, good luck to the PM and his new team. Go Tonga!!!
