It's been a while since the strikers went back to work and obviously a number of things have been highlighted in the weeks since.
The parties held after the strike event showed clearly that this thing was not about wages, because they sure spent more money on those polas and drinks than they are ever likely to recover in extra wages two or three years going.
The deputy prime-minister is reported to have said in parliament that there will be no need for new budget increases as the wage requirements will be attainable within the current budget outlay (albeit things aren't going to be roses.) The 3rd member for Tongatapu was thankful but you have to be worried, at least I would be. Apart from the current heavy work the Government is making with cuts in programs to find funds for the wage increases, the only way they can meet the wage increases is to slim the wage budget in some other way (such as getting rid of a few of the numbers that require wages.)
For example: I have 100 people being paid $100 for a cost to me of $10,000 to do work. After industrial action against my favour, I now have to pay people $160 for a new cost of $16,000. Hmmm, I can only effectively profit/survive at the $10,000 or a little more, so one compromise I could make is:
Originally: 100 people x $100 = $10,000
Option1: 62.5 people x $160 = $10,000
Option2: 50 people x $200 = $10,000
So, if I really didn't work very well with the 100, I've now been forced to try new options such as pay the new fee to fewer people, or even cut the numbers down further (50%) and seriously increase the wages of those left behind.
