The Difference between TCC Internet and Tonfon Internet

When you plan redundancy/backup procedures for a large organisations you tend to have 'scenarios' such as what do you do if (a) a nuclear bomb explodes on top of your office or (b) a bus runs over the boss. Things like this give you a measure of how prepared you are for different levels of disasters. This type of thinking is why almost all companies disrupted by the September 11 disasters were operational within two days (some operational the next day.)

I went over to visit a cousin and we were talking about something inane, like the mangoes all over the floor and the kids starting school 'again' tomorrow morning[1] when she mentioned that their internet was down again, the whole day. I told her that's funny, we didn't notice anything wrong with the Internet.

she: Ohhh, you're on Tonfon, ta si'i ma'u taha tama 'a e Tonfon he TCC.

me: Uhhmmmm, always! At least with the Internet, Tonfon has TCC beat hands down.

she: Why is that

me: One word, Justin

Abandon all hope ye who enter

So, back to the disaster recovery plan. At our little office we have 'stuff' set up for standard disasters like one or two or more machines failing we have a thing we do to recover from that. We have batteries to recover/safeguard our servers incase of power failure.

Hey, we even have backup procedures where we're copying data not only to CDs, or DVDs, but to other hard-drives and even to machines in America. What we don't have is a disaster recovery plan if Justin get's hit by a bus. If a nuclear bomb went off, then computers would be the least of our concerns for the next millenium of radioactivity.

Actually, if Justin gets hit by a bus (may it never happen) that wouldn't be so bad here in Tonga. Someone would probably roll him into the bus and take him to work.(smile, that could have been a joke)

If Justin were lost to Tonfon Internet, we would not work with a disaster recovery plan but go to disaster loss minimisation mode. Technology isn't what's making Tonfon's Internet service a much better fit for us and all the other cybercafe's in Tonga, it's just one guy.

But let's not praise get to his little head, because apart from knowing a heck of a lot to bandaging Tonfon's system so that it is highly stable and functional the guy is a typical 'nerd' with no backbone.

We've encountered a few disasters where Justin had to login directly to the modems here at work or scurry up the roof to check the antennae, connections etc.

Just this afternoon I was talking with Pulu and guesstimating how long it would take, if Justin were not at Tonfon, before we would Abandon all hope ye with Internet.

ciao,

SamT
