Japan Commits 0M to Pacific Islands

Monday May 29.2006

NAGO CITY, Okinawa-Amid a growing presence of China in the region, the Japan government committed Saturday to provide members of the Pacific Island Forum a new development assistance package worth 45 billion yen, about $400 million, over the next three years.

At the same time, the 14-member states of the Pacific Islands Forum, in a joint declaration with Japan Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the end of a two-day summit here, renewed their support, bilaterally, for Japan's continuing bid to secure a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.

A little weird don't you think ?

During the era of imperial expansionism of Great Britain, Japan, Germany, America, the Pacific was the battle ground for getting fueling stations and then trade of copra and other 'luxury' items for the home market. American Samoa remains American, Western Samoa --> Samoa is developing a world image as feeding grounds for New Zealand Rugby. The Hawai'ian Islands remain another American annexation. Fiji is still discovering herself and what happens when forced labourers begin a population that rivals the indigenous population. The Marshall Islands I suppose is still partly there, and likewise the French test sites.

Now the main value (?)  of the Pacific Islands is that with a lot less money, you can influence something termed a "vote" in an organisation far removed from our shores but surely and slowly moving in from all sides.

The strings inevitably attached to LOVE in the 22nd Century.

I wonder where our lovers, France and America are these days? Probably off somewhere else in the world making 22nd century love.
