Tonga Government to ease suffrage through subsidy scheme for electricity consumers

In a broadcast this evening with 'Eseta Fusitu'a, the Tonga Government announces measures in progress to ease suffrage(?) for residential electricity consumers of Tongatapu and Vava'u.

After a lot of fluff, 'Eseta Fusitu'a finally got to the point of the Government announcement.

1. Government has directed Mr. Dalgety, Chairman of the Tonga Electric Power Board to approach Shoreline Corporation to remove the 11 cent fuel levy fee imposed on Vava'u & Tongatapu consumers (this levy is imposed as a subsidising mechanism to assist consumers on other islands.)

2. If the request is not accepted by Shoreline, then Government will:

   a) Pay the levy for the 1st 200 units of electricity consumption

   b) Begin subsidies for metering from June 1st

   c) Government subsidies will be for a 3 month period while negotiations are continued with the electricity supplier.

3. Government is continuing formal discussions through two venues, a select committee set up earlier this year to review with people's representatives to parliament on similar concerns. A 2nd select committee to be chaired by the Deputy Premier and with the chair of the TEPB as a member, will investigate the issuees raised by petitions already recieved at the palace office and another expected soon.

Their report is to be tabled with cabinet.

The 1st thing I was asked, before I even heard the news release, are we still marching ?
