Ugly Numbers, Road Fatalities, A little Old

Soap Box

How safe is it to be on the road in Tonga ? Well, according to analysis of 1996 figures, we find that Tonga is one of the most dangerous places to be on the road (whether walking or riding.)

We have the highest rate of fatalities per 10,000 vehicles in the Asia Pacific (well, for 1996 anyway.) So, if you're visiting the South Pacific Islands and intend being on the road, here's the old figures.

Tonga 52.1

Papua New Guinea 25.0

Fiji 9.8

Anywhere else, is either 2.0 or less. Taking into account our populations, it probably really does mean they just don't have road fatalities.

Good times to be especially alert on the road are:

* Friday, Saturday evenings

* Saturday, Sunday early morning

Hmmm, sounds like a lot of other places.
