Which mobile phone

Which mobile phone ?
Seems to be a recurring question being asked once a month so I thought I'd put this little bit of information through.
Caveat Emptor: Let the buyer beware. I might be right, or all this information is bogus.
Most mobile phones from the USA are not going to work in Tonga, both mobile services in Tonga use GSM @ 900Mhz. To my understanding most mobile service providers in the US use a different protocol (not GSM) and thus most of those phones cannot be used in Tonga. To complicate things further for stateside Tongans, most US phones that I've come across do not use "SIM" cards.
If you want to provide a phone for your relative in Tonga you are most likely going to have to buy the phone in Europe or Australia/New Zealand. But there's a problem with buying phones in Australia (don't know about New Zealand.) You have to buy a mobile phone that is not tied up with a "phone plan." Most of the prices and phones you find quoted are for phones security coded to one of the service providers.
Since I was looking for a phone and took a while to get any information online I thought I'd share a few resources with you.
http://www.dse.com.au Dick Smith Electronics.
DSE is one of the major electronics suppliers in Australia and have nation-wide store locations where you can buy/pick-up a mobile without any ties. OR you can order it through their website for delivery. Wish they delivered to TONGA.
Anyhow some of the sales that were interesting included:
Nokia 2100 GSM - AUD$199.00
This is the phone I have and it cost a whole lot more in Tonga, wayyyyy too much more. Likewise it is the cheapest that I've found so far, ooops.
Nokia 3100 GSM - AUD$259.00
Colour, Camera optional
Nokia 7250i Tri-band GSM -(supports 900mhz as well as 1800 and 1900)
Camera integrated, Integrated FM Radio, MMS. For those with wayyy too much money
If you're buying, then drop a penny in one of our pockets.
ciao,
Sam T.
