God calling yet; shall I not hear?

Author: Gehard Tersteegen (Translated: Sarah B. Findlater) music: Henry K. Oliver. Tune: Federal Street Alt. Tune: Breslau

  G                      D7       G
1 God calling yet; shall I not hear?
2 God calling yet; shall I not rise?
3 God calling yet; and shall he knock,
4 Ah, yield him    all;  in   him confide;
5 God calling yet; I     can- not stay;

  D                         A                D
1 Earth's plea-sures shall  I     still hold dear?
2 Can I his lo- ving voice des- pise,
3 And I my heart the clo- ser lock?
4 Where but with him doth peace a- bide?
5 My      heart I    yield  with- out   de-  lay;

  G                  Em         D7        G
1 Shall life's swift pass-ing years all fly,
2 And base- ly His kind care re- pay?
3 He still is wait-ing to re- ceive,
4 Break loose, let earth-ly bonds be riven,
5 Vain  world, fare- well! from thee  I   part;

  D7            G                  D7  G
1 And still my soul in slum- ber lie?
2 He calls me still; can I de- lay?
3 And shall I dare his Spir- it grieve?
4 And let the spir- it rise to heaven.
5 The voice of God hath reached my heart.

God is calling yet; (oh, hear Him calling calling!)

We sang the English of this hymn as part of a funeral dedication (using the Tongan Hymn tune) together with The Christian’s Goodnight (by Sarah doudney, music by Ira David Sankey) and it greatly moved the elders in our congregation.

An adaptation of the hymn and tune.

I guess this is how the original music will have been heard.
